What dream car would you choose on retirement (other than a Cali naturally)

A WW2 Jeep would be fun.

The Bristol is a 1955 Bristol 404. It is a beautiful piece of engineering and art!

I borrowed a good friend's Lagonda some years ago to do a mutual friend's wedding. I believe that was an LG45 as well. If memory serves me, they sport a delicious low revving 4.5 litre Meadows six cylinder with triple SUs and twin plugs? Am I correct or am I getting confused?

Fan-bloody-tastic. I have a 1936 Riley Lynx* which also has a twin cam (and also a pre-selector gb like the Lagonda Rapier). Amazing what those engineers could squeeze out of those smallish engines back in the 1930s. Do you plan to rally it again - when things get re-started properly?

The LG45 and the Bristol are also gorgeous.

Lagondas, a Bristol and now a Riley Lynx! Best Sunday breakfast time I've had in ages. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. The only trouble is it makes me think I should ring the changes with my lovely motors.

What a lovely Riley and looking totally correct shod in those wonderful Blockleys.

You are absolutely correct. Twin Vertex magnetos drive a bank of plugs each. one of the big benefits of the LG45 is that it has the G10 gearbox - which has synchromesh!! Its like driving an automatic - you put it in top gear and it goes anywhere - I exaggerate! In the 1930s the factory did have problems getting people to use 1st gear, lots of people used to start in 2nd.

My rally days in the Rapier are over. :( My navigator (son) got married and that was that! Selfish kids!! Sue, my wife did navigate for me on a rally in Iceland. She did very well for a first time. Unfortunately the terrain shook the car to bits. I felt pretty guilty about shaking her to bits (the car, not Sue) and it cost an enormous amount of time and money to get the car back together again. So, I retired. UK endurance rallies aren't as destructive and they are great fun.

My neighbour owns and races a DBR1. Might blow this particular budget by a few quid!

Fantastic. Bruce is a real credit to you as are your other cars. Are those Lucas P100s he is wearing? Who did the bodywork, Tickford? The two main things I remember about driving that LG45 was the view down the long bonnet and the wonderful tick over it had. :thumb
 
On Aston Hill near Wendover today, we saw 10 or 12 McLarens coming the other way. Owners Club outing? They looked awesome.

BTW, Aston Hill is where David Brown tested his cars all those years ago. Small memorial near the top on the left (by the car park).

Yes, they are Lucas P100s. The bodywork was done by Lagonda themselves. The design was by Frank Feeney later of Aston Martin fame. He was 21 when he designed the LG45. The whole balance of the car screams luxury - in 1936 it cost over £1200.

My dream car was either an Aston Martin or an Austin 1100.
I’m soon to retire and have a few Mercs to sell first....old ones, not worth much I fear...my father’s.

I kinda fancy bringing over an American made TAB 320 (teardrop caravan) for a different version of escaping to the country....My friend has just placed an order for a 911 ( I believe this might blow the £100k budget?!). I’d never noticed them before, but if it were not for the thought of a new dog, pulling a TAB with a Porsche 911 sounds fun!!

PS I’m not a petrol head, just a dreamer, so none of the above may make sense?! And I would need a bigger garage!

I'm enjoying the thread and my Porsche friend had already showed me the you tube of the crashing Porsche.... I will NOT be driving it!!
 
As I advance in years and near the time when I can retire I like to think about the car I would treat myself to when I do take my pension.

At the moment the Cali is my everyday and only vehicle. So I would like something for fun. I would still keep the Cali.

Given that I share the same good taste in recreational vehicles ie a Cali I thought it interesting to see what fellow petrol head forum members would choose and why?

911 992 carrera s convertible
Morgan plus six or four

At the moment- having done a factory tour and various test drive days I confess I’m leaning towards one of the new Morgan’s- why because they are so involving and essentially basic to drive (but oh the f type what looks).

What retirement car “”treat”” would you choose for let’s say under 100k and why?
Technically I’m already retired and my only vehicle is my campervan. But I’m only 42 so am starting another venture. My next additional vehicle will probably depend on the success of that. I’ve owned a number of two seat and no roof cars in my time and that would be the way I’d go for an additional vehicle. My choice mirrors many on here, it would be either a Boxster (718 Spyder or GTS 4.0) or a V8 F-type convertible. However, I suspect I will wait until there are some more electric roadster options. Just now the i8 Roadster (plug in hybrid) is the only option I’ve seen and it’s over £100k so falls outside this game. I suspect Porsche will capitalise on the success of the Taycan and offer electric versions of some of their roadsters in time. I’m in no hurry but welcome new developments.

It’s an interesting journey this one. I’ve had all sorts and am in the lucky position to be able to choose something special but (apart from the Stratos) I’m perfectly happy with my full race 1380 Swiftune Mini. Less is SOooooo much more. When it’s pulling 8k and you can’t hear yourself think over the noise of the 45 DCOE/straight cut gears etc and you’ve no idea where it’s going to lurch next I don’t wish for anything else. Perhaps building the thing from scratch adds to the enjoyment?
Deffo well under the £100k budget but still North of £20k.
Maybe at a push, a flat nose 964 would be nice.
 
I’ve had 2 Cayenne turbo and 4 911 turbo s The last 20 years. Used them daily to work in big cities and I never had any major issues with any of them. Win win if you don’t wanna spend your retirement money on repairs. Just stay away from 911 turbo 2001 they are trouble !
