Awning seam

I have a 2015 Cali bought earlier this year and the seam split on our trip to France last week. It is obviously out of warranty (has very low mileage so maybe previous owner didn't use the awning!). It does appear it is not fit for purpose, but I presume I will still have to pay. Awaiting call back from VW in Hatfield. Any idea how much??!

I expect they will want to replace the whole awning rather than the roll out bit. Guess at £700 plus
I think it is possible to replace just the material so it might be worth trying a caravan/motorhome garage.

The Canvas itself, as a spare part, is about £250.

Unless my maths is wrong then you may still or only just be out of warranty. Is it worth a letter to customer services?

Which dealer Loz and was it preemptive strike.

All done in less that an hour!
I am very impressed with the service from Swindon Van Centre, had a chat with the service staff and the sales guy, also with the tech who did the work on the awning.

Its a new site, only been open since the beginning of the year, the facilities are spotless and the attitude of the staff was great.

They are good tbh, I couldn't fault them. I know the Service manager Peter really well from when he worked a Skoda and we had our VRS before the Cali.

Glad it all worked out for you Loz :thumb

On another note, I have rubber rain strip now, just need to work out how it fits to the awning now......... if anyone has any photos, that would be ace, Cheers

You will have to remove the awning and then it presses into the alu strip
in-between the awning brackets.

It only presses against the back of the awning as @westfalia says remove the awning by winding it out and removing the 2 screws that hold it to the brackets;

Then wind it back close and it can be lifted off.
Push the seal on with the high side outboard, drop the awning back on, wind out and refit the screws.

I had my awning replaced today by Eurovans of Crawley. They replaced it in about an hour on the first visit. That's what I call service!
I have yet to unwind and inspect it. Glad to hear that the seam has gone but concerned about the stretching issue mentioned above. Only time will tell :(

No joy with used warranty as it's not covered (non mechanical).
Gave VW a call who stated the Sun was an external influence and therefore would not be helping at all. Actually compared it to stones entering the radiator. I suggested avoiding the Sun is going to be an issue as its a sun canopy.
As has been advised in other threads give your van a real good going over before your 3 years run out.

Hi Alform
That is an absolute disgusting response from VW and that bozo should be up the road.
I am sorry for your situation as that sort of arrogant comment does make my blood boil.
If it’s out of warranty it does put you on a more back step. But by the number of posts concerning this issue and the fact that they are swapping out with a different design does show they agree there was a manufacturing fault with some units.

I know my words only state what you already know and don’t help in the resolution.
Perhaps a letter to the top.....
I do hope you find a solution that is not too expensive for you..

I would love to get that VW bozos nuts in a vice......

Find a member with a one piece one who is still in warranty and see if they will get it done for you by swapping them over? ;)

My awning split and was replaced under warranty in August 2015 when it was only three months old. Regrettably they were still using the two-piece for replacements at the time.
I now have a VW extended warranty and I've just checked with them to see if the awning is covered. They were not 100% certain but they thought that the awning came under the category of bodywork parts and therefore would not be covered. They suggested that I check with a dealer who should know when they put a claim through which category it comes under. I don't hold out much hope!
On the positive side they confirmed that such things as fridge, control panel etc are covered.

And another one. Awning started unravelling a couple of weeks back whilst out in the sun up in the Peak District. Took it into dealer this week for them to check over and they agreed it was a warranty job. They have a new awning on order and will call when it gets in for mine to be replaced.

I am sorry but by law they need to replace it as it is obviously a manafacturing fault and they would lose in court.

We are starting to get more awning canvas's in stock this week and just to confirm all our new ones are just in one piece with no seam.
