Cooking with no gas and no ehu

Last edited:
Sounds like the Ridge monkey BBQ would work a treat then. You can use as a coal BBQ here and have for later as a gas powered one.
Can recommend, they are great! Takes a few seconds to remove the gas burner bar:

I would definitely smuggle in the gas bottle if I were in your shoes. I don’t think you have any viable alternative and I don’t think anyone reasonable would hold it against you.

Personally with rules like this, I would vote with my feet and choose a different festival to attend, time to name and shame the event organisers. Take it this event is charging you for overnight camping facilities.

I have since found out that you can take the following

Hexamine Cookers & fuel blocks from your local Army Surplus store.
When lit they stink.
Your neighbouring campers will wish that gas had been permitted.
Only here to help.

Sounds like a great festival, but clearly don’t want you cooking your own sausages on gas, however cooked on a bbq will most probably taste better.

Usually it's not even the BBQ being buried - it's just the heat from it being sat directly on the sand that is retained for ages - so people think they are being responsible by taking the BBQ away not realising that they have left a pile of sand that is hot enough to instantly strip skin from bone for a passing child.

If I was in change, they would be banned

Hi all, we are going to a festival in our California Beach, and aren’t allowed to take gas bottles in. No ehu either. I will need to cook using the leisure battery. Has anyone any advice in doing this and what did you use if you have?
Yes there will be food there, but I am coeliac and I’m worried there may not be much gluten free food available, so taking food and being able to cook as a back up. Thanks in advance.According to their site, the campervan area has EHU

Normally I would expect a camp site with cooking/BBQ limitations to provide a communal area with shared cooking facilities, but given that this is a food festival I guess it makes sense to expect you to make use of the food stalls. According to their site, they have "A huge selection of food choices from vendors including Vegan and Gluten Free specialists plus many more! ".

EHU is available according to their FAQ pages:
Q. Are there any electric hookups available?

Yes, but these are an additional extra cost AND for caravans/campervans only. Please select this at checkout.

I don’t know wich festival you’re attending, but the typical festival forbids gas stoves on the actual festival ground. However, you can take a gas stove to the festival camping ground or car park. I guess your camper will be in the car park or festival camping ground?

Chemical or spirit stove is the ‘legal’ answer. Hexamine stove or Trangia stove.

Hi We use a Ecoflow Delta Mini unit with an Induction 800w single hob ( Vango ) . We also have Low wattage Kettle and toaster. It all works very well . ECOFLOW DELTA MINI + 160W solar panel . Great flexibility for use in the camper and also at home . I have used the Solar panel connected to the Ecoflow unit then use a 13a plug + 5mt lead with 16a Blue 220v connected to the Campervan to charge the whole unit .

Hi we missed out on the electric hookup pitches. yes they do gluten free, but I’m coeliac and I’m worried about cross contamination. A festival is the last place I want to be poorly

We won’t be using one of those

@Lisa and Simon Have you made a decision yet? Really you could do worse than getting a Trangia as @Amarillo has already suggested. They are very easy to use, cheap to run and maintain and quite safe. We have had one for about 15 years and still use it when we are able to (beats getting the inside of the van greasy/smokey etc if cooking a fry up for example. Also cuts down on condensation. Lastly I would add that they are self contained, take up very little space and will always 'be there' ready to go :thumb
