Custom build - 2020 Westfalia Club Joker 4Motion - Offroad build thread

Upgraded my Victron DC to DC charger to a BuckBoost 100A. Awesome stuff! Can easily charge my 200Ah of Lithium leisure batteries in a short time. With winter now here the solar isn’t of much use.

Some may not like having it visible but this was the only location possible to allow the fan to operate. Not really needed in winter but might be in a hot summer. All metal including fan housing so no risk with a little bump if the shoes.

I’m driving 90% highway/city and 10% off-road. My dealer was really super cool and swapped out my rims and BFG’s for a new set of Black Rhino Warlords with Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tires. Much quieter and can still handle the off-road just fine. Air suspension is on auto level so that’s why the front looks higher.

I’ve been doing some more upgrades preparing for summer trips. Added a Hess HeckBox XL and Front Runner water tank. Nice 20 liters of reserve and easy fill of the van with modified tap with quick hose connects.

Very practical thinking! I wish we had the gear that Hess in Switzerland offered, but at the same time I would probably go broke.

My son wants to do this. Can you advise the process. How easy and cost. Thanks.
Hi there, I'm in Switzerland and assume you are in the UK. In the UK the best place for this retrofit is Leighton Vans. My mechanic in Switzerland provided them the coding required for the retrofit:

Not exactly cheap though. ;-)

Many thanks @Webbah_in_Switzerland

Crikey. You're not kidding. Good thing I prefer the analog cockpit

Does the odometer get reset back to zero or coded to match the original?

Does the odometer get reset back to zero or coded to match the original?

It gets coded. I had changed to larger dimension off-road tyres and with the T6.1 you can change the coding to adjust the speedometer to the new diameter, but you get one adjustment and then it’s no longer possible. The previous mechanic made a mistake and the adjustment was wrong. So when driving 100 km/h my speedo would show 110. The only way to rectify this is to change the instrument cluster.

Rather than simply replace it with another analog I decided to go for the digital cockpit retrofit. As I have a very good relationship with my mechanic he rolled it back 10% from the original (and inaccurate) odometer readings to match reality. I suspect most garages won’t do this and will match the original when recoding. I had kept accurate records showing the kilometers when the coding was changed +10% so he had no problem helping me out to make things right.

Now it’s spot on with GPS and Speedo showing the same speeds with off-road tyres.

Added front and rear recovery hooks and also fitted a spare Tyre BFG KO2. Ready for summer off-road adventures!

How did you fit a 235/65/17 in the rear carrier? have you cut the plastic tray and fitted the larger carrier?

These are 225/65 R17. But yes you do need to cut the plastic a little bit. Not a big deal. I also have an onboard compressor so inflated to 2 bar. And sprayed silicon on the Tyre to slide it right in.

I see so you run 235/65/17 on the van and the spare is a 225/65/17?

No, 225/65R17 all around. The 235’s won’t work for BFG’s. Only Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus work in that size for AT’s.

Those are the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus tyres. I went back to BFG as the dealer took them back and did the swap for no charge. He put those on his rental.

Did you not like the pirelli AT ?I was thinking of going down that route lol

They are great tyres! I just missed the BFG’s as I go off-road often and with all the mods I’ve done they also look better. I originally had the 255/55 R18 BFG’s and those were a bit noisy. I find the 225’s to be perfect at 3.5-3.6 bar cold. Not much noise at all.

I’m a bit of a perfectionist though and glad I have an understanding and fair mechanic to support me trying different setups!

He only uses the Pirelli’s on his off road Cali’s that he rents though as they are quiet and perform well.
