Insurance

Is there a comparison somewhere that shows what is / is not covered between these companies? Might be one for when I am bored and swimbo doent keep adding to my list of jobs!

I’ve had a tracker retrieve fitted to mine (for insurance) I had it fitted by Trackerfit.co.uk and I think it was about £600 including the device and 5 years subscription- they fitted within 8 days from order and the insurance company gave me 14 days grace to have it fitted.

I personally don't think there is any need for a specialist policy. If a policy covers fire, theft & accidental damage, recognises your vehicle as a camper van and doesn't have any relevant exclusions in relation to how a fire, theft or accidental damage is caused then i don't see the issue.
Specialist companies charge a premium price for focussing on a specific market segment where they can extract a premium price - more about packaging than quality of the underlying cover.
I insure house & 2 cars with the same company. Any debate over whether something is part of the van or an accessory simply moves the claim between car insurance and possessions away from home on the house contents policy.

Thanks all. I’ll revisit and review insurance options on today.

Caravan and Motorhome Club offer New for Old on new vehicles also. Not the cheapest but I have experience of a right off claim on a new caravan which was an excellent experience. Not the cheapest but then you get what you pay for. My premium has gone down slightly over the 5 yrs I've been with them with the California.

Think I’ve narrowed it down to Comfort (£421) or AIB (£456). AIB don’t insist on a tracker but Comfort said they did when I spoke to them last night (but think this was wrong). Will query that with them today. I think they both back off to Aviva’s specific Motorhome Insurance (AIB sent me a copy) so they should have the same policy on trackers.

So AIB quoted:

Unlimited annual mileage
2 drivers
New for old (upto 3 years/15000 miles)
Accidental damage
Lost keys
£200 Excess
£5000 personal belongings
Legal cover
9 months European cover p.a.
No tracker requirement

I also asked the ‘bacon sandwich’ question and was advised that any gas fault resulting in a fire would be covered. Also wind damage to awning would be covered. Don’t want to put either to the test though :)

The tangled web of Insurers!
So, AIB use Aviva and the Aviva Motorhome Plus Policy Document has Victor Millwell Insurance on the front cover but then refers to MC Assist and Comfort Insurance.
Also phoned Comfort and they now advise I DON’T need a tracker :)
Conclusion: Both AIB and Comfort appear to back off to Aviva so I’ll go with Comfort Insurance as the cheaper of the two. Both much cheaper than CAMC.

Good stuff, glad you got it sorted :thumb

Good news on not needing the tracker with Comfort. When I first tried a trial policy with them it seemed if the value of the van was > £75k they would ask for a tracker. Most people I speak to say good things about Comfort will will keep reading your posts GGD. My additional protection will be a ghost and possibly a BIG Rottweiler .

I'll be doing the same in a few weeks so I'm very grateful for all this info!

AiB quoted me £5k personal belongings cover but when they sent the Aviva wording through for review it states £1k. Safeguard (with Highway) state £3k in their information.
I was all set to head to AiB (and will check with them again tomorrow) as the Safeguard offer has AA which I don't need which probably reflects a chunk of the price difference (AiB £375 v Safeguard £470)

Same 5k/1k anomaly when AIB quoted me. However a phone call confirmed that the correct amount is £5k. In the end I went with Comfort insurance as they were the most professional when I spoke to them. I think the policy is the same from both companies and is underwritten by Aviva. Comfort also provides a new for old for 36 months if you have owned from new.

I will be back to Comfort when the van finally arrives, week 43 build still on the the production line  I am still going through a claim currently DAS Law who are included in my previous Comfort policy have been brilliant sorting my personal injury and medical visits.
I came from a GW and two peeps I know had their Moho‘s flooded in storage earlier this year when the River Don burst it’s banks. Both insured with Comfort and covered to get new for old. One had a replacement in a few weeks, ex stock, the second had their replacement on order from the manufacturer within days, absolutely no quibble.

Thanks for the posts on this topic. I was going to stick with my current insurer, LV, but I'll see what Comfort offers.

If it's AVIVA underwritten on the Campervan policy it's definitely £1k, they get 'confused' with the AVIVA Motorhome policy which is £5k

Thanks for that Rod. LV have so far come back with the cheapest quotation by far at £194 (or £220 with NCD protection). Fully Comprehensive based on 16000 miles p.a. with dashcam fitted. No requirement for a tracker mentioned. I will download the policy documents to read through and will call them to discuss what is and isn’t covered I.e. your bacon sandwich example. Thanks again.
I'm going through my insurance options now and thinking about adding a dash cam to reduce premium but I would be concerned that if the cam wasn't working or didn't record at the time of an accident for some reason that it may go against you in the event of a claim and may even invalidate the insurance!

Caravan & Motorhome Club Insurance.

Not the cheapest but covers everything even when camping. Be aware some companies will provide cheaper insurance but basically only cover for motoring accidents etc. So a cooking fire - not covered. Awning out and damaged by storm - not covered. So check very carefully what the cover actually covers.
Good Evening WelshGas, hope you are well? I am looking to insure my Cali and am interested in getting a quote from your recommenadation Caravan & Motorhome Club Insurance. Have you been with them a while? I dont mind paying the extra as long as everything is covered correctly. Will they provide you with a quote although I am not a member?! Happy to proceed with the membership if everything makes sense as I’m sure we’d get a lot out of the membership anyway! Also are you able to send me a direct link to their website? When I type Caravan & motorhome Club Insurabce in the search there’s a few different ones coming up and I want to make sure that I pick the right one! Appreciate any help as you can tell I’m sure I’m a newbie! TIA. Take care

I’ve been with them for 6 yrs with the California and previously 15 yrs with a Caravan, with a total loss of a 2 week old new caravan, that was replaced in 5 weeks, with an apology that it took so long.
Also if you insure with them with a newly registered vehicle you get New for Old for 2 yrs, I believe, could be longer. So no need for GAP insurance.

Thanks for the details in this thread. I have my insurance to finalise today as pick up the new van tomorrow !

I'm also with C&MC. I like that the policy wording is comprehensive and clear. I think the way it's set up is that C&MC / their brokers have produced a standard policy wording, and different insurers will then underwrite that policy wording at whatever premium level they decide, according to the particular vehicle and driver, location etc. It's worth being aware of this, since any claims will be decided by the insurer not the broker. The first quote I got through C&MC was with an insurer which seemed to have atrocious reviews, so I asked C&MC to look again and I chose to pay a bit more to have a (hopefully) more reputable insurer.

Grateful for your response, thanks very much for taking your time to share your experience, it means a lot to a newbie when everything seems so daunting! I am hoping that everything will be sorted with C&MC tomorrow .

Me again sorry.... I have been in contact with C&MC and they have asked me to find out what make and model the immobiliser is. I have stated that it is factory fitted, does anyone have any more detail about which immobiliser is fitted? TIA
