International Travel

I assume you didn't take your van, or did you?
Looks fab!
No. Have only seen 1 Campervan in almost 1500km of travels.

That turtle should have aired down for that soft sand
The night before you could hardly walk on the beach because of the turtles coming and going plus the tiny hatchling heading for the ocean, but one advantage of us being there it kept the sand crabs and foxes away.

looks amazing. How are you travelling?
We had a 4x4 hire car, Susuki Vitara. Has to be 4x4 or you cannot visit the mountains, there is a Police check station on the road, no permanent 4x4 then No Go. Also needed to get to desert camp.
Most tourists we met were on escorted tours using 4x4s with their own drivers and in convoys. No coaches outside main cities such as Muscat or Sers.

The pictures brought back some good memories.
I've travelled Oman for both work and pleasure and it along with Jordan are the by far the best countries in the ME to visit as a tourist. A few years ago, I flew out to see an old friend in The UAE and we drove his Landcruiser all the way down the coast of Oman to Dhofar (as far as the Yemeni border which is effectively a dead end for tourists!). We returned through the Rub' al Khal to Dubai and only had camp beds and sleeping bags (with a tarp when needed) so just kipped out in the open on beaches or in the desert with a campfire (apart from a few nights in a hotel in Salalah before the return drive), A fantastic experience which I'd love to repeat in the van but it's just not a straightforward journey by road any more.

Thanks. Were you alone then? Who fid you hire from?
I ask because we love that sort of thing.
We hired an african Land Cruiser in namibia and drove for 2 months through the kalahari, etc etc. with just one other. Im sure 200 tomes nicer than the trucks on day trips we saw!!!
Similar in Australia, for 3 months
We need somewhere new.
I will miss my cali though. Just in Croatia on the last of our 90 days

We did the whole lot through Trailfinders. the Hire company they used was SixT based at Muscat International Airport. we used Trailfinders as they have Discount Deals with the various hotels etc not available to the general public.

Thanks for that. Our trips were hiring campers, but ill take a look .
You won’t find many Campers/Motorhomes or Caravans in Oman.
We saw one Caravan Dealership with very large, very ruggedised Caravans complete with external generators to power the on-board AirCon unit. Didn’t see any on the road nor campsites of any description.

I remember one campsite at Jebel Shams but other than that people just camp wherever they like, it’s quite a popular family activity, and they can be very loud gatherings. I guess it would be called wild camping here. Areas with trees up in the mountains are often very busy, as are places like Sugar Dunes on the coast, near a lot of salt pans.
