Oil Comsumption / Engine Problems with 2010/2011 Cali's

As a Quality Manager myself and reading the long thread in the German forum I did not understood the root cause and whether it was fixed. Everyone was speculating what the root cause was that results in a devastating wear of the cylinder. I could not imagine that a software change that might lower the temperture or other things would remove the root cause. This engine block is used in slide modifications in a lot of cars that run for ever. When I saw the EGR theory it was a reasonable option and I alrady bought the oilcheck kit end of Sep. When I saw frystyk's screenshots and saw I had the cooler version C I expected the result. The amount of wear is still suprising - means 15 times mir that a normal engine. If you argue the wear ist concentrated you assume that the wear is even higher than 15 times than normal. So I have a 1 year old engine with 20tkm that has a wear of > 300tkm. Perfect!
No Oil consumption yet but that may be because of the diesel introduction- 9% diesel in the oil.
If you follow my logic than you would be surprised how long the cylinder can take that wear - 60-120tkm would mean a 900-1800tkm. Not bad what the cylinder would run would there not be the Al-oxid abrasive be introduced to the diesel-air mix through the exhaust.
Would you not think this would be a reason for a recall? In the pharma world I work in a small risk in patient safety would end your business.
With the effect of that design failure I really don't understand why VW takes the risk of that become more public and ruin the trust of customers further after the damage they habe done with exhaust fraud.
Just my few but .. maybe not for long.

Is this a 180bhp Bi Turbo engine issue only?

Yep.
I'm pondering whether to add a 'so far', but there is no evidence the issue occurs elsewhere.

We have finally given up on VWCS and our van went in to the dealer to have a new base 180 BiTurbo engine fitted on Wednesday. I asked that the service department check that the EGR is version D, can't imagine it is not, and make sure the rest of the original bits are still up to spec, alternator, turbos, air con etc.

Took us a long time to decide to go down this route. The final reason was when we had three engine lights on and the van in limp mode coming back to Bristol from Newcastle last week.

The jury is still out as to whether we keep the Cali longer now or trade it in for a bigger Fiat/Merc van we can stand up in. Despite having owned 10 VWs over the years, we won't be buying one again that's for sure.

Alan look at the recent posts and ensure you have all the correct bits fitted to include the software......out of interest how much have that quoted inc VAT..?

^ that's grim but an understandable decision. Sometimes you just have to move on in life (I keep reminding myself ;))
I would check the suffix yourself before paying up and driving away. There have been some scary photos in the Facebook group today showing the insides of egrs that have started to breakdown.

Hmmm .... something else to look forward to?

OMG....

Are they type 'D' like I have in my new engine or prior ?

If you experience this, and the experience of dealing with the people at VWCS, I assure you it will not be pleasant....

Corroded egr cooler. Not my image. I believe the credit is owed to Fred from the TX forum.

Type ?

I suspect BTW that even though VW paid for 70% of my new engine and I paid 30% that they worked the prices so that they were ok and I was charged more.......

I would never ever buy a VAG vehicle again.

I am returning the loan T6 Combie tomorrow so will have a look at the work then. Heritage have been very helpful and I would recommend them. Having said that, Breeze were equally helpful, but we moved back to Bristol before we decided to spend the money. Both of them came in at £7239 inc VAT that includes the DPF, Exhaust probes and a software update, the full Oct 2016 TPI in fact.

Apparently Heritage have replaced two 180 engines this year, with mine making it three. If other dealers are doing the similar numbers, then this issue is not going away!

Had an Audi once. Worse car I've ever owned. Had a wobble before purchasing the Cali, and not surprised or unexpected over this issue.

My first VW was a 1302S Beetle and my last is the Cali I own.....

I would never ever buy a VAG vehicle again as they are a bunch of gangsters.

Those picture were posted today, but the suffix letter wasn't mentioned. I would guess they are of an older EGR, I hope!!!

Then I was sort of shafted by VW as mine was a little shy of £8500 inc....they paid 70% and I paid 30%

Disgusting Firm...

I think the variance comes from the labour charge.

Both Breeze and Heritage quoted £75 per hour, while Heritage originally said it was £95 per hour but reduced it for me. Parts were £ for £ the same with 8 months difference in the quote dates.

Was chatting to a Brit in Spain in the summer who had a rather nice brand new Merc Sprinter he had converted to his design. He said the Sprinter and the VW Crafter are built on the same line, but the Sprinter is finished to a much higher standard, as you would expect from a Merc.

He would buy a VW he said.

Alan

We must not even try to stand up for VW......

For instance why is it that in Germany that they replace this not fit for purpose engine FOC but here in the UK, they make you feel like a leper that they are helping, but in fact argue with you.

I have had 5 VW's - not wishing to sound negative, I certainly won't be buying another VW again either. The service and general support is pretty dire bar the odd 'good' dealer. Things do go wrong, It isn't what happens, it's what you do about it that matters - VW would be minded to remember this.
From the hundreds of contractors that I see every year I am more than happy to discuss VW vans with them...

Looking to get a quote from Lookers, Guildford for a replacement EGR on my 2011, 180BiTurbo
They have quoted over the phone, together with the includes and excludes in the price. However I just can't seem to get a single email confirming or otherwise what we have agreed and discussed...
Now that I have a partial answer it turns out some of those items that were included are now not included (glad I checked)
Wow, can it really be so hard to get a clear written confirmation of quoted price and works from a dealer?? ...been 2 weeks now...

They are trading on their 'Brand Value' little realising that it's leeching away day by day....they need to wise up and compete with the upcoming young thrusting vehicles makers....or pay the price....downward spiral.....

Can the D version of the EGR be retrofitted? Just thinking of prevention (hopefully the problem has not occurred on my engine yet). I suppose I should get the oil checked and the EGR examined.

Yes it can as it's simply a newer version. But expensive, but cheaper than a new engine.

LarsLarsen on a post above provides details of an Oil Check provider.

We have had 10 VWs over the years from Polos, Golfs, Passats, a T4 and 2 x T5s but not again now.
