Retrofit parking heater discussion

Thanks for posting the photo - it looks like a neat job.

How do you find the control there - ok? Would you recommend it?

Also - have you got the heater under the van or under the seat? Would you do the same again?

Not mine fella, chap on the T4 forum sent it me. I'm awaiting a photo of the outlet.

I've got to make a decision soon on what were doing, only 4 weeks till were away in it

Heater is going under van with California SE stainless steel bracket :D

Were looking at getting the original SE trim to work at the moment but tbh its a pain ! The guy doing the work is a legend thou so we'll see what we can come up with :thumb

*Have sent a few Pm's to people that have the parking heater factory fitted asking for help, hope they dont mind !!*

Brackets have arrived, there not stainless :( but are more substantial that webasto's bracket so its not all bad news.

The guy fitting this for me has tried VW and so have I but I cant get a definite answer, Alex + smg said he would get his parts to sort but there having computer problems by all accounts.

There appears to be a couple of different variations of the B pillar trim, I could do with the registration number of someone's beach with the same colour trim as mine that had the park heater fitted at factory if anyone want to help :help If you can help please PM me your reg, virtual beers if anyone can ! :thumb Link below to the colour of my trim. Even better if I could get a photo of the said trim !

I know its a lot to ask and a pain but once I've had it all fitted I'll pass on the parts details for other beach owners who want OEM looking parking heater :thanks

Jim

Yes, the panel on ebay looks the same as the one on my van which does have the alarm switch on it.

Regards

Well the heater is in :clap

The guy at Advance Specialised Products in Manchester was an absolute legend :thumb and he'll be sorting my electrics as well !

The heater is fit under the van using the California SE bracket from VW, the inlet is placed in the drivers step & the outlet is from the back of the drivers seat in the trim. I wanted the outlet as the SE but the required holes in the B pillar are not present and I didn't want to cut into it ! The heater control is on the B column thou.

Turns out that the normal route used by the installers of the heaters through the floor of the seat is more difficult on the beach / caravelle as there are four pipes running under it for the heater /aircon. This meant there was not much room to get the pipe through and he had to bend a alu heat sheild a bit to get it to fit, he did a few other bits that made the job which I can go into if anyone wants the info but you should just get it fitted there

Will take some pics on thursday, were almost ready for the outer heb in October :bananadance

I noticed in a fly out leaflet that came with one of my VW magazines that Just Kampers were offering the O.E. T5 GP Eberspacher Parking Heater Kit including ducts and vehicle trim for £825 inc. VAT

It does not appear to be on their website though!!

Worth investigating I'd have thought!!

Well done Bigbud.

Looking forward to the photos - especially the heater control location.

I spoke to these guys when I was originally looking at the ex-demo I bought that didn't have the heater. The bloke I spoke to (for about 30 mins and I was only enquiring!!) really knew his stuff so it's great to know there's substance behind it.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more if you can include some details and/or PM me some names if you don't want to post directly. Let them know they should blueprint it for other Beach owners out there as I'll be pretty keen to get one fitted too and Manchester's handy.

Thanks again guineapig! ;)

Matt

Very nice job.

Think my van might get similar treatment one day ...

Thanks for posting the pics.

:thanks

Thanks to Bigbud for the advice, pictures and PMs on retrofitting a heater.

After speaking to a few people, we also used Peter + Advance Specialised Products in Manchester who was very knowledgeable on the phone and they have done a great job, using the VW brackets rather than the Webasto ones and fitting the heater below the floor of the van. This is the first of the brand new Webasto heaters that they have fitted that don't need a separate temperature sensor fitted, running it off software instead. That was therefore one less thing to worry about.

We spent some time thinking about where to locate the rotary control unit (same as Bigbud's)as we worried about catching it when we turned the driver's seat round.

We have fitted it directly above the 12V Socket on the trim panel to the rear of the passenger seat in the beach and think it looks great. There is JUST enough room to fit it there but it was tight.

Now we look forward to getting use out of it this winter....! I will try to post a pic if anyone is interested...!

Attached are some pics of the location of the control dial.

Defender.
That's awesome. Great location for the controls also.
How long did the install take and roughly how much...???

This could be my next purchase :clap

I dropped it off at 9am and picked it up at 3.30pm (think there were 2 guys on it for much of that time) spending a day in the Trafford Centre.....

The cost was under £1200 using the VW bracket parts and take off maybe £100 if you use the Webasto brackets included in the kit.....a little more than I was quoted up here (Scotland) but with his manner & knowledge on the phone, the time spent in advance talking me through the problems faced & what was needed in a non salesy manner and the fact Pete had worked on a Beach (very few about) and done a great job, i was happy to give him the business.

It is an expensive extra for us but makes our spec perfect for us and I had to bear in mind that the car itself is expensive and couldn't trust just anyone with it! The guys seemed to take a real pride in it so can recommend them.

I think £1200 is a fair price. When we were looking at T5 conversions we were being quoted £1000 to add a diesel heater.

So bearing in mind the quality of the fit,the genuine VW brackets and the complexity of fitting into a Cali, I say that is a good deal, enjoy the cold winter evenings :)

Looks like a good install.

If you choose Eberspacher heater you can have a Call tronic whick means you can control your heater from your Smart phone temp and all...

I really couldn't choose between the eber or webasto - both seem really good with similar spec. It all came down to installer preference if I'm honest. I think that webasto do the same idea with the app but that looks like a great gadget!

Think i'm going with Eberspacher just because I can get a good deal on a kit... No a man :D

Also VW fit them in the SE but think it's a D3.....

Like the install though.... :D

I was told by a vw dealer that the heater in the SE was a derated webasto which was 3kw as opposed to their standard 3.9kw. Good luck when you fit it. Unfortunately I didn't know a man!!!!

Had couple of nights away with the new heater being used in anger....spent time up in Braemar and Ballater at the weekend.
-2C outside, a hard frost and warm as toast inside.
Delighted with the comfort.

Now if we can just do something about the condensation on the front windscreen I would be really delighted!

Get a thermal exterior screen cover to stop condensation. Eithere a 'silver screen' or a 'taylor made'
