The new T6 Grand California ( XXL )

Surely the double back is a more desirable option for a similar price point?

Did they not stop making the Doubleback as it was a flop? I must admit I never did see one on a campsite or even a VW show!

Also the Doubleback is a conversion at the end of the day,!

I know, it's not a vw factory built product but still a practical concept executed in a functional cool sRyle!

I have not actually seen one in the flesh but I particularly like the approach of taking the vw camper and thinking outside of the box (excuse the pun!) If discontinued I can only think the cost to achieve the design was prohibitive... I'm a big fan of innovative aftermarket vw products, (if they have a functional place and are somewhere near affordable ) inclusive of california and caravelle

The ethos of the vw camper is cult yes also extremely practical,

Totally agree, we are looking to change to something bigger in a few years and we are also put off by the warranty issues with motohomes, especially when travelling overseas. Something that has a 5 year VW warranty that you could take into any dealer would be a no brainer.

.

Not sure it would be any better.
The majority of VW dealerships have no idea about the California.
I've Said for a longtime they need a handful of specialist California dealers dotted around the country with full superior California product knowledge.

Judging by the increasing number of van conversions I've seen on the road this year in both UK & France there is a developing market which VW would wish to participate in.
Down sizing motorhome and up sizing transporter based vehicle owners are all potential purchasers.

The room for a toilet and having a greater gross weight capability would make the Crafter a better option for conversion than a LWB T6. Another plus may be that the seats could swivel without opening doors etc etc.

No way!!!!!

I mulling over the idea of replace my lovely Cali Beach for a bigger "thing" and, bearing in mind VW reponse to factory defects (i.e. roof corrosion, etc...) and VW dealers knowledge and/or service, I've got clear it won't be a VW.

My favorite choice is something based on a MB Sprinter 4x4.

I spotted this obvious Cali XXXXL prototype this afternoon. Clearly it is using the standard T6 awning and the Quasimodo T6 bike rack is now made from actual scaffold bars. I'm liking the entrance ladder storage built in to the tailgate.

We popped into a Stockholm dealer today, he just zero idea about the van, the spec and it even had the incorrect price based on the spec sheet they had in the vechicle, by around 22k SEK (2 grand GPB).

The competency in VW leaves a lot to be desired but I still love the Cali.

I've done plenty of research over the last couple of years and still haven't found my ideal set up which would be the lowering bed INSTEAD of a fixed bed (they all seem to do it in conjunction with which I don't understand as you can't use them both at the same time), with increased lounge space as a result.
Hymer duomobil is probably what you'll want then:-

I just ran a search and see I must've been busy for sometime. Sorry to repost old news

Here's a walk around that just popped up on my youtube feed..... cali about two thirds of way in...

Space 1999.. Oddly outside looks fine. Inside looks cramped unless the VW guy is 6ft 5in with a 48in chest (I suspect not)

Electric sliding sunroof by VW:Nailbiting.
