California delivered ... in the wrong colour

The "flat" grey is increasingly popular amongst the "boy racers" in the UK. When I was ordering my 6.1 last August I was told by a motorcycle semi pro racer I work with that the grey was very popular on the motor racing circuit, many team vans were going "flat"grey. We got Starlight Blue in the end.
yes indeed, it is: some compare it to a kind of Porsche grey.
For me it refers to the mouse grey of the 70s-80s: the standard light grey of my father's salesman's cars: golf and Jetta. I think it's kinda retro.

Would the grey one actually arrive in June?

So it’s a temporary fashion... In one - two years it will be unbearable.
Red, white, black will never be out of times...
I also think people love the name “Ascot” as it sounds posh. If it would have been “Hannover” or “Lyon” grey and “Ascot” red, people here would push the red :D:D:D

Hey @calibusje ... good luck with making my your decision. After this shocking year my thoughts wouldn’t be on the colour ... but instead on how quickly I can get my family into a new van making memories. Now if you’re in lockdown and will be for a long time yet... then wait. But remember unexpected delays happen and it may not arrive in time for summer. VW are pretty good at messing deliveries up. Many people on this forum who ordered a T6 never got it when they were supposed to. Myself included.

If waiting then sounds risky .... taking the lovely red van, packing it up and then driving off into the sun to make dreams come true has got to sound appealing.

I don’t think about the colour of my van much nowadays. I do think about driving to Scotland, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Andorra, France, Belgium, Switzerland and skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, roadside grills, discovering waterfalls, mountain passes, cycling coastal raids etc... all with my wife and girls who are growing up far too quickly.

We’re a long time dead. Carpe diem

thanks you for you reaction, you are so right: they grow up too fast and we -a family of 4- have had wonderful memories for 8 years and had such wonderful experiences with our old T4 westfalia. We will not sell it so we can continue this for a while. Waiting isn't that big of a deal, although it shouldn't last. The current lock-down, started today now means that we can no longer just go to the dealer and everything is by appointment. I hope to have an appointment as soon as possible (sent an email this evening). They can indeed reasonably 'adjust' their delivery times and should we end up with a coast to be built in the right color as we had decided, and this is not there at the beginning of July, we were promised a rental california for 3 weeks, free of charge. So they want to find a solution, but this was the first days, then they pushed us a bit towards the cherry red. Not bad, it looks good.
Keep safe, one day it will be over so yes: carpe diem.

Thank you for the reaction. Unbearable? I don't think so, for me it looks very retro so not a current fashion at all but each his choice and that's fine by me. I think of red as a bold choice but can also think of safer colour choices and -for me- ascot grey is in between.
Cherry red sounds a lot better than ascot red ;)
Anyway, the name does not mean anything to me, for me it can safely be called mouse grey :D

Just catching up only to find no decision yet, the suspense arggghhh!
Sorry for that, a new lock-down has started here and a lot here is by appointment and again with a lot of homework. I'm trying to make an appointment with the salesperson and his chef. Since Wednesday I have only had contact with the VW garage by mail and a few times by phone, since the seller has been on leave since last Wednesday and will not be back until tomorrow, I hope to see him very soon. Was difficult to negotiate: he gave me two choices Wednesday (three if you count cancellation) and those days to think about it. Hence my post here. After arranging an appointment with them, I can continue as I cannot just choose the red one. Also: I want to see the cherry red one again, maybe the love will come then and forget about an ascot grey coast. I must give it a shot.

Yes, that is what he said: at the end of June with a delivery at the beginning of July. It is an already ordered but not yet made stock car for themselves. They want to make a 'blank' of it again and draw it up completely like our original order form (also the color now).

Mine will fit in perfectly at the F1 Grand Prix around Europe then. I'm taking early retirement and Marshaling at the races really appeals to me as an interesting and fun pastime.

Depending on how long you forsee a lockdown where you are it might be wise to get the order in for a grey one. End of June will soon come around, you won't miss much camping.

The die has been cast: I have followed my feelings and indeed, asked the question: who am I. Well, I'm rather retro with a little bit of chic but with a twist: it will be an ascot grey.
For me cherry red was a bit too much in my face and also too sporty, how strange that seems for a campervan but certainly not a wrong colour; I still like it.
I feel good about my decision and will always keep looking at the red californias but without regrets that we don't have one. We could have a cherry red and again chose a grey one. A grey mouse with a twist because it remains a 'special standard colour' for me.
May I thank you all again for your contributions and to all the people with a cherry red: congratulations on your vivid choice; I really couldn't do it; it's not me.
I will see our california every day: either through the front window of our house or through the window at my workplace and I want to see an ascot grey. Did I do well? For me I did.
Oh, and what did they give me extra: an expensive waxing of our new cali upon delivery and the ability to use a California rental free of charge for 3 weeks should ours be delivered later (final delivery date as stated on the new order form: 5 July 2021) + the purchase price of my opel grandland remains as it is now (no depreciation) unless my opel garage offers more. For us all is o.k. I also want a good relationship with the dealer because they are close to us (just in the middle of our house and my work) so I want to go there for maintenance or repairs.
Now I have to check and double check and recheck the order form that the dealer sent me ;)
Greetings

Congratulations and so glad you have what you really want; an exciting wait ahead and plenty of accessories to browse n the meantime.

Enjoy your summer and stay safe.

And perhaps some cherry red striping, just a thought  to put that little sparkle to the grey!

Congratulations, I definitely think that you have made the right decision for yourself.
I must congratulate you on all the thought you have put into your purchase. Replying to all those postings, almost a full time job over the last few daysl I'm sure a lot of members have enjoyed following your journey. Thank you for letting us be part of your purchase.

So pleased you’ve come to a decision that feels right for you. Looking forward to seeing the pics in due course...

Congratulation @calibusje and thanks for sharing your dilemma. I've really enjoyed reading this thread - it amused me and helped to distract from the boredom of working in my home-office over the last few days

It reminded me of a thread a long time ago about the perfect bacon sandwich. Oh the discussion about choosing cheap white bread over posh sourdough, red sauce or brown sauce, smoked bacon, streaky bacon...

Brown with sausage, red with bacon, which should always be smoked.

hallo,
:thumb He will certainly get an extra sparkle, you are right about that.

thanks, I also benefited from all the reactions, really.
Unfortunately, I am not much of a bacon sandwich specialist ;)
