Increased Oil Consumption Problem (2010 T5 Cali 180 bhp)

Not true. Just a lot of people in denial.
Sorry, I don’t understand your statement.

In denial about what? There is a oil consumption problem on 180 engines, or the dates I stated?

The early problem was just 2010-11 engines as I spoke to VWUK at the time as was told this. Other years are affected but not to the same degree as far as I can tell and may be not for the same reason, ie the alloy corroding inside the EGR.

The latest D suffix EGR seemed to solve the issue as it had a coating on the inside to prevent the corrosion. It is possible that this coating can weaken or not be applied properly in manufacture so that the corrosion reappears. Only VW Germany will know.

It only affects engines with the alloy EGR. The rest of the range have a different EGR made from Stainless Steel I believe. Happy to be corrected on that.

I've been in touch with warranty direct and put this scenario to them. They have said it would be something they would cover and the premium is pretty low. The upper limit is the value of the vehicle. It might be something I'd need to get in writing but this would certinaly help alleviate any concerns so will probably be going ahead on that basis.

Has anyone else had experience of making a warranty claim for this fault.

I was just about to quote that from the post from the Facebook Group which appeared yesterday.
Poor guy...
£10k bill in total

@WelshGas I find it disappointing that you can’t admit there’s a real problem with this engine. It’s well documented and there’s a Facebook Group documenting the issues across a wide range of years with the 180bi-turbo.

We need to be fair with new people and admit there’s a potentially expense issue.
That’s not to say I wouldn’t buy one, but it would have to be at the right price.
If you notice in my posts above. I have never said there wasn't a problem. The cause has yet to be positively identified. The proportion of vehicles affected is unknown but is certainly not as high as some have said " avoid ALL 180's " and I have stated on a number of occasions as long as the buyer is well informed , can share the risk with the seller by agreeing a discounted price if he wishes then go ahead everything else being equal.
BUT I will speak my own mind when people rubbish ALL 180's as worthless with out a scrap of evidence to support their view.
There are very few actual vehicles mentioned on the Facebook group, a lot of posts but no concerted group action - I wonder why?
Most of the vehicles mentioned are relatively low milage for their age so probably laid up most of the year. Could that be the problem after all these vehicles are meant to be driven . Lots of theories , very little if any substantiated evidence and very little action by those who blame VW.
Be Aware, Be informed, make your own decision based on the facts and not the Noise of a few disgruntled owners.

I would read some of the feedback from Warranty Direct and Warranty wise customers who have tried to make a claim. They would almost certainly disallow any claim stating that it is a known fault on The 180 engine..Then you would be left with a massive bill to pay yourself..

IMHO: If I really wanted to buy a 180HP I would choose one with a new engine with an EGR with the “D” suffix or one with a very, very low mileage with a EGR with a “D” suffix. Then I would be really happy with the power of this beautiful engine

Just had ours remapped now it’s over 5 years old. Still only 20k miles..Wow what a difference you can feel the power come in much sooner and less gear changes. After doing over 500 miles the fuel consumption is better by 4-5 mpg. My 140 is now 175. I drive like a vicar and will continue to do so..Without the gearchanges..

Hello. Found a 2015, 29k, 2.0 BiTDI BlueMotion Tech SE on sale (private seller) not far away. And followed the help-needed-first-cali-purchase post to find all the info on the 180 T5 engine and landed here.

Does the 2015 model have the same engine and likely to have the same issue? Searches find the 2010/2011 engine, but can’t find info if the 2015 is affected. Thanks!

Hi. What and where did you get it done please?

I Disagree. Compared to the numbers sold, a small proportion. Post 2011 an even smaller number and the majority are low milage.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing one as long as you are informed and aware. Why cripple your enjoyment of the vehicle by buying an underpowered 140 which many get chipped to provide more power, which has its own problems.
“Cripple” FFS. A least the OP can use that ridiculous statement to judge the accuracy of the rest of your post.

Bit slow on the uptake aren't we. Lots more chip the 140 than the 180. I wonder why.
Watch out now for another screenshot.
Whatever makes you happy.

Your best route to to establish what ‘suffix’ the oil cooler/egr carries. Yours might be one of the few production models to get the /D from factory. Most only get that as a replacement. It has a coating on the cooling fins that SEEMS to be preventing them (sometimes) breaking down and being consumed by the engine, leading to bore wear.

Thanks 2into1 – seen a similar reply in its-the-180-bitdi-engine-reliable and “...If the part No. on the label has a suffix letter, then I would suggest you will not have an oil consumption issue in the future.

However, if the number does not have a suffix letter, then the EGR is original and come a higher mileage in a couple of year's time, you may well have to have the engine reconned or replaced…
.”

So looking for a suffix letter, and need to work out where the EGR is!!

Managed to work out what the EGR looks like, am I looking for the suffix and code on the barcode sticker, or the code on the actual housing, stamped into the metal, as might be visible at 1 min 46 seconds in
?

Just to update my earlier post, I decided to pull out of the sale. I felt really bad, but the seller did sa
Is there any indication on how may vehicles are affected, and precautions you can take to avoid this? I'm about to pull the trigger on a 180 btdi with 30k, and regular servicing and wondering if there is a way to avoid issues. It has not needed any additional oil between services and the last one was 8.5k milesbetween service so hope it's ok.

I've read quite a few threads now and seems a bit of a gamble, but this seems pretty solid. That said, my local vw specialist has said dont touch any 180btdi, which seems excessive...

To update my earlier post, I decided to pull out of the sale for a few reasons:

1) After looking into warranties, most had shocking feedback (as suggested), or stated they simply wouldn't over this fault.
2) I appreciate that the internet does generally focus on negative experiences , however when both your local specialist and VW van dealer advice you to be very careful or walk away its a worry
3) the seller did state it used some oil, about half a litre in 2k miles (so I had to assume 2.5 litres in 10k miles) this was on a 30k mile van
4) with it being a private sale I had no come back or security should I have an issue.

So now currently looking for a Cali with a 140 engine in budget, which is frustrating as they seem few and far between.

Agree, best to move on. My 180 used 250 mls over 19,000 miles upto last service. Less driving this year but still showing full after 8,000 miles since last oil change.

The suffix is after the part number on the label stuck to the alloy to the right of the oil filter. See below.

Just looked at the video and that is not the EGR on the 180 engine. That EGR is for all the other engine ranges and is made of Stainless Steel and mounted at the back of the engine.

On the 180 the EGR is made of an alloy and mounted at the front centre of the engine behind the radiator. The oil filter is mounted on the top of it.

EGR suffix D is currently the best option, without guarantees. No suffix or any other letter has a history of problems, with a percentage of catastrophic failure.

Thank you Alan,

Not had a chance of looking in the engine compartment yet, will use your advice and I’m sure I’ll find/spot it.

Hi. I bought my 2012 180 SE 4 months ago. It’s been running fine but as of late has been drinking oil at a rate of 1l per 500 miles!! It’s got 83000 miles on the clock. Any advice??

EGR was actually replaced 2 years ago!

Take it back if you got it from a dealer. If private get the compression checked and a Miller's Oil analysis done then ask VW to do an oil consumption test. Could be turbo seals, EGR damage or a new engine around £8k fitted! Try Retro Resus if you need a new one. Good luck.

I got it privately. I assume any decent garage can do those tests?
