Increased Oil Consumption Problem (2010 T5 Cali 180 bhp)

Yes. He had the EGR fitted on the advice of his VW specialist. I’ve spoken to the specialist today and he too confirmed that if anything needed doing the owner always had it done without question. There were no oil consumption issues previously recorded. They have only just started to appear.
I would maybe try and investigate the rationale for the change bearing in mind failing ERGs are thought to be the cause of this issue.

Just to add, how many miles have you done in your 4 months of ownership? To me unless you have done mega miles it's one huge coincidence this has happened in the 4 months you've owned the 9 year old van.

So that still begs the question why was the EGR changed if there were no oil consumption issues previously recorded?

I’ve just spoken to the mechanic. There was a warning light on the dashboard for engine management unit. He did a diagnostic check and found the EGR to be blocked hence the reason he changed it. Just had a quote for £8k. VW insist you change the particle filter at around £1500 plus lots of other bits or they will not warranty the new engine!!

I’ve done £4K in 3 months. I’ve just checked and I actually picked it up mid-June!!

I honestly don’t think he did. He advertised it on this site. He has hardly used it for the last 2 years hence why he sold it. We felt very comfortable buying from him.

If it was me, I'd give the seller a call and see what they have to say. I agree with above and pretty sure they will have had an idea, especially given the faulty EGR.

If they won't play ball, I'd be thinking of having a punt at small claims for that kind of figure.

Were you aware of this potential issue before you bought the van?

Having spoken to his mechanic he stated the EGR was only changed due to a diagnostic check. There was no way of telling that the bores were faulty

The fault has been dicussed so many times on this forum, which is what prompted me to hold off (see earlier posts on this thread) when I nearly bought a 180 SE. I'd be surprised if they weren't aware of the problem existing.

If they knew or not, they sold you a van that needs an 8k rebuild within 4 months. I would be horrified by that as a seller.

Anyhow I think I am probably repeating myself now so will butt out, sorry.

I agree. Once I get a solid couple of quotes I will let him know and see what he says. As far as previous MOTs are concerned nothing obvious leaps out relating to this issue

Apart from getting it fixed I think I have few options. I wouldn’t sell it privately for obvious reasons. I could part ex it but wouldn’t get much for it !

The only thing the recycling of the exhaust gasses would affect on an MOT would be the emission test, and then only if the DPF was clogged and not filtering properly. Give the van would probably be in limp mode by then it would have been sorted before the MOT.

Replacing the engine is a lot to spend particularly after having just bought the van. In my experience, you will gain a lot more confidence in the Cali with a new engine, and if a VW dealer does it a guarantee that lasts 2 years, albeit with a lighter pocket.

Once I get some firm quotes I will ask the seller for a contribution……

Just a thought… would it be possible to replace just the block or just a rebore?? If so, any recommendations?

Someone recently posted about a rebore on the faceache forum

Going to change my oil at 7200 miles. Aluminium content is too high within the oil.

I think you may be in the local area (ish) or retro resus in Taunton. They have done loads of swaps and know more about the issue than anyone else. Their main guy contribes to the Facebook forum for issue.

Have you read the VW TPI?
