How bad this corrosion can go if just left unattended?
Like will the roof leak in 10 years?

Just got my T5 back....no corrosion, tape applied
What year? as they have been making T5's for some time.
Same as yours..late 2014

My 2014 T5 has had the roof repainted and a new seal bonded to the roof in October 2017, anyone else in the same situation who has subsequently had a recall to have the tape added after the bonded repair?

Not sure if I would want the bonded seal removed unless a proper repaint of the roof edge was carried out.

I'm sure you have read the previous posts from Nos: 263 onwards?

I had, my question was was T5 related as there has been no actual recall for the T5 roof issue as far as I know?

Can someone advise how long is the process to remove the seal and apply tape and refit tape if no issues found?

The Workshop Recall goes back to 2010 I gather. My 2014 was done at my last Service. They won't call you, but would do it on your next visit unless you book it in specifically. I would ask VWCS for their advice.

I can't see it being more than 2 hrs tops. Had mine done during a major service + cambelt and brakes.

Exactly Just book our van in for the second service - asked about the roof check and was told dealer wanted 2 days for this. This was a receptionist so will pop into and speak to the service manager when passing.

Probably won't order the Tape in until the roof has been checked.:headbang:headbang:headbang:headbang:headbang

My major service took 2 days in total, well almost. Courtesy van booked for 2 days.

I'd say if the dealer says he needs 2 days, take it. Ours was in for 1 day for timing belt and water pump and 4 year service as well as the roof check and OK the roof check was botched because the seal had been bonded on but I think if they'd had 2 days, they might have realised the issue, taken their time and done a proper job. Having said that, if the seal has been bonded on then it needs a new one as the only way to get it off is with some force which knackers the old one.

Hi @Meoncoast It would be booked for two days for the following
1: there is corrosion under the level of the seal and it needs to be painted then have the tape applied once the paint is dry.

2: if we remove the seal and it’s wet/ dirty under that seal it has to be cleaned then the roof has to dry before the tape is applied. Also if it is wet and the rubber seal is not damaged/ corroded then we need to dry the seal before it’s refitted.

The repair itself takes about 2hours from inspection to cleaning and fitting however as above there are wether factors and paint factors to consider. I ask for all calis with the recall to be booked for two days so I can asses and start the repair on the first day and then finish of the repair he next day after everything has had a chance or breath/ dry out.

Thank you @Vw guru that is very helpful. I use Totton Breeze and always get first class service was rather surprised when 2 days were requested as not mentioned before by others. I have a few small warranty issues that need looking at so will get the service sorted. Then fit in the roof check with these other jobs. Not been tempted to look under the rubber but I recall how wet and dirty the roof was on our T5 prior to old style/full roof repair at ABCrush. I do know our current rubber is tight.

This system is much better than the old one where the work was done by approved body shops. In August last year mine went to Marshalls, Newbury via Breeze, Totton and I didn’t get it back for 17 days. When it was finally returned there was still bubbling under the (new) seal so it had to go back. No tape or adhesive in those days. Two days sounds great.

I didn’t get it back for 17 days.

The original reair on our T5 was under 2 weeks door to door - with a replacement new Cail via VW UK. Removal of the front cap and replaced with new metal one and repair of the main roof. On our T6 I am only looking at a check under the seal and tape application. If it requires paint job then it takes as long as it takes. I personally would not be happy with the current repair if our old T5 had to have the full works undertaken with the cover-up cap being commissioned by VW today.

I agree. It took another two weeks last November to sort out the bubbling under the seal but they also did the cap replacement at the same time because some front roof panel corrosion had appeared, despite the fact that it should have been cured in 2014. Everything seems fine now but I expect that mine will still be subject to the recall for checking under the seal/applying tape. I would be more than happy with two days for that at a VW dealership as opposed to transporting it to an approved body shop for the third time.

As I posted in mid October my dealer checked my van and found no corrosion. When applying the tape they managed to lift off some of the roof paint with masking tape they were using in the process. They told me not to worry - it would be fixed but the van would need to go to a body shop in Newcastle from Kendal. I'd assumed and hoped that this would be completed before Xmas. Despite various follow up calls from me nothing has happened yet so have just rung again today. Now been told the earliest they can do the work is in 2020! I thought I must have misheard, but no. Not happy and waiting to see what can be done about it.

That's a creative excuse!! Masking tape took the paint off!! Serious masking tape that... I'd guess either they caught it with something or there's an underlying issue on the original painting of the roof during manufacturing.

We were lucky in that it only 9 months from us first taking the van in for them to find the corrosion for it to be fixed. Of course then they screwed up the recall but that's another story. If you read the T5 and T6 threads on corrosion you'll see some folks have been waiting a lot longer than a year - I think someone said 4 years.

A positive way of looking at it is that it will be warrantied from then and should last longer...

I applied Viking tape to my roof then had to take it in for a service so decided to take the tape off. With the aid of a heat gun the tape peels off incredibly easily but it still pulled a LOT of paint off, so I can well believe that masking tape would peel the paint off. On my roof the top coat has not adhered to the primer well beyond the edge.

If I ever find corrosion on my roof it would never be going to any VW Dealer even if under warranty! Clueless every single one.

Our T6 second service today and corrosion found. Now, the wait for VW to approve paint repair and application of tape.

I am a bit confused - our 2012 Cali had its roof and roof panel done in 2014ish one of the early ones where you got a full replacement of stuff and repainting etc etc...
now dealer tells me it has to have something done under VW recall
I have searched but am not good so can anyone point me in direction of threads about what this exactly is for ones like mine?
Servicing desk guy is a bit vague re specifics?
Thanks
