So maybe the latest version with the split hob and the other little extras might have no roof promlems. Will look at mine over the weekend and report back. Picked mine up end of July 17

Up till now I've had my head truly buried in a bucket of sand. Wishfully thinking/hoping that having a March 17 Calli "with tape" it would be one not to suffer the dreaded roof corrosion, but now reading that a November 17 has been found to be suffering roof pox, the Dilemma now is, "To check, or not to check"!

When will this Saga ever end, I guess probably not until the T7 at the earliest.
My March '17 has tape factory fitted.
I have tape showing on rear corner just above the rubber. no need to remove rubber just have a good look all round, transparent tape so a close check needed.

Thanks for good advice .. lts whats lurking under the rubber that bothers me ... Weekend job

I've decided against removing the rubber the reason being that if the rubber has a faulty metal gripper it would potentially tear the tape and paint underneath, which would defeat the object of the tape.

There is no bare metal, it is moulded in the rubber seal.

Will still have a very close and careful look this weekend. Thanks for the advice guys.

From the information I've gleaned on here it's the bare metal protruding through the rubber seal that causes the corrosion. No bare seal metal contacting the roof alloy - no corrosion.

I took my T6 in today to have the tape applied. They checked it a couple of weeks ago, found no corrosion, but had no tape. They told me that the process today involved putting masking tape on the roof just outside the seal/edge of where the tape is. They taped it and when they removed the masking tape it peeled the paint off the roof in a couple of places - due they say to poor adhesion of the paint. So now it's got to go to a bodyshop to be resprayed. Awaiting details of what exactly they are going to do. I have solar panels (removable) and a brandrup isotop inner. This is attached with velcro at the bottom inside but at the top some pieces which I don't think are removable. Has anyone else had a respray with an interior isotop fitted? I know some folks have had new bellows - is this because they remove the roof to respray?

I haven’t got an isotop but they definitely removed the bellows- they then renewed them as they said they had damaged them during removal. I’m not sure whether the new repair entails removing the bellows.

You can remove the top push in parts at the top. Use a trim removal tool such as contained this kit to release the securing strip.

Quoting my own post to link in Loz's topic below - I missed this topic which covers exactly the above and others might have missed it too? Useful to have it linked here too maybe:

I’m in a dilemma as I did exactly what Loz did this summer with the 3m tape from Viking, Cali is going in for some warranty work and this recall was mentioned. My issue is do I take off the 3m tape off before it goes in or leave it on the roof.

I have no corrosion on the roof and our Cali is July 2016
Any thoughts?

I would personally take it off if possible otherwise this could have implications for your warranty and then decide on further action after the work has been done.

It’s a tough one but if you don’t remove it I think they might well decline to remove/inspect it.

My thoughts - Taking tape off may not be easy and could possibly damage the paintwork, not covered by warranty as you did the damage. Not much point in taking the tape off just to have it replaced by VW.

I think that the best solution would be to go to the dealer and explain and show him that you have had the tape applied at your own cost and hopefully they will agree that it is complying with the VW requirement and not breach any future warranty issues.
If they say that you will have to remove the tape then the decision has been been made for you.
You have in effect saved the dealer the labour time, I assume VW would pay them a fixed price for the recall.

As I posted a bit back VW peeled off some paint accidentally whilst trying to put the tape on. If you damage the paint whilst taking your paint off you could end up with the worst of both worlds - VV declining to do anything because you have damaged the paintwork. If it was me and I was going to remove the tape I would seek some advice on how best to do it. I'm sure someone on the forum will know. Hairdryer perhaps?

I don't know what's best in your situation - as I posted earlier if it was me and I had just bought a new or nearly new Cali to keep then I would apply this tape myself but that's knowing I would spend half a day or ar long as it takes to do it - in the right weather, with the best PPF tape available, fully cleaning and degreasing and shaping the tape with a low power hot air gun and maybe doing two layers.

Not every VW spanner is going to do it with the utmost care and attention - he'll most likely raise the roof, maybe give it a quick wipe with a rag and stick it on.

To answer above, yes, use a hairdryer or hot air gun on low power (carefully) to heat the tape, soften the glue and pull it at right angles slowly (hard to explain but see pic below) and carefully a section at a time. However, if the original factory paint (which we all know is not the best quality, thickness or best adhered) underneath has any bubbling or is just not adhered that well then the risk is there for sure of some coming off...

I'm as afraid that the local VW guy would never be as meticulous as we would for ourselves. I would only trust if they send the cars to a specialized workshop to get the needed expertise.
Anyhow, here on the Belgian VW-front we seem to be ages from that. They didn't even know what 'recall' I was talking about last time I went to pay them a visit.
Or somebody did get some positive signs?

I'm in a similar position having applied the Viking tape myself, however I did find some slight bubbling at the time but applied the tape anyway, as at that time VW had not announced they were going to apply the tape themselves. Since then I applied some tape to my old Vivaro as an experiment, I've just removed it and it came away cleanly without damaging the paint which is encouraging. The problem with the Cali is I don't think the paint on the roof is anything like as tough as the Vivaro. I could see some evidence of peeling when I applied the tape and I wouldn't risk removing the tape myself.

Hi from a dealer perspective we have to action the recall it can have server implications from vw for any dealer to miss a recall or workshop action. It’s better for us if there is no tape on the roof as we have to fit the specific tape from vw any other tape on there would invalidate any work carried out by a dealer. However most dealers will not remove tape that has been fitted by a customer as it could damage the roof and that dealer would be liable, you would either have to sign a disclaimer that any damage done removing the tape would be at your own risk and cost or that you remove the tape yourself.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, it's a tough one as for what's best . My gut feeling is to take off the tape, clean up and blow all the crap out of the seal.
Probably try a small part with a hair dryer as Max-Felix stated and see how easy it pulls off, not sure the dealer would take much care in taking it off if they offered to do so.

How are they coming from the factory now, the same as with the sealant around the seal or something different?
A little cheesed off to say the least!

Hi they are coming through just with the tape around no sealant at all which annoys me as we are instructed to follow the workshop manual to the tee and they factory doesn't:headbang.

Up until recently, the factory was applying tape but the body shop repair did not. I tried in vain to ensure that tape be applied to my repair at the end of last year but to no avail. So, communication between VW and the dealerships is as good as ever!
We are genuinely lucky, though, to have Vw guru as a member to share his informed opinions and to help us make sense of it all.

My Jan 15 registered T5 is going in next week for MOT and to fix weird headlight issues (Daylight running lights on offside work when you start the engine, then stop and full beams work sometimes not others :() and they (SMG) are going to inspect for corrosion and fit the tape (if no corrosion). will let you know! (there's no visible corrosion but I've never lifted the seal)
