Buying new Beach - advise on spec please before I order

In 2000, I drove this car across the Australia and then from Madras in South India, Via Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and the Balkans. It is/was a Holden Kingswood, built in 1972, with a 3-speed automatic gearbox. There were occasions where it was really useful to be able to force the transmission to stay in a particular gear. I am hoping that the transmission on the California is somewhat more 'nuanced' than that one though..(& yes it is a real, although posed, picture - taken somewhere in the outback of Victoria)

What have you got on your feet? Are they to get above the spiders?

I can't be bothered with gizmos. I've had auto lights and wipers; electric folding wing mirrors; steering wheels with lots of buttons; heated front screen; rear camera bla bla bla on previous cars. I didn't spec any of that stuff for my Beach (to keep the cost down if I'm honest) and I don't miss any of it. I would ditch electric windows if I could.

I tried S yesterday for the very first time after reading this thread. Just stick it in D for forward, R for backward or P for stop (why the letters for the mode are the last or penultimate letter of the direction defeats my logic).
Not sure if this is one of your serious or comical moments Tom.

You didn’t go for Climatic...?

Really great spec, the essentials and no silly bits, very nice. Still time to work on the yellow option... :D

Very nice spec. Where will you spend your first night away?

I hope the rear passengers agree.[/QUO
I hope the rear passengers agree.

I hope so too! Although we went on a test drive in a Beach with the standard air con and they were happy with the cooling (we specifically tested it for this exact purpose).

Anyway, it will be a noticeable improvement from my 1998 A3 in which only 1 window opens and has no aircon.....!

I hope the rear passengers agree.

It was one of the main reasons I changed my vehicle. It’s not nice sitting in the back long distances without it.
Even in winter. We had 5 of us over to France one year and I did say never again in that van. So did one of my mates. We had to pull over every 2 hrs so we could move people around, front and back.

I wouldn’t buy another without rear Climatic. Should be standard really considering what a California costs.

Just for balance I'll put forward a counter view but travelling with four all through Euro summers in August I have never experienced this and the temp seemed very pleasant and even throughout. The standard Cali AC is pretty good IME.

But I agree lots of options (that you get on most £15k hatchbacks these days) should be standard on a Cali given the price - cruise, reversing sensors etc.
