Sorry if this has been covered before. My Ocean 150 dsg has only done a few hundred miles so the engine is still tight, but I'm only getting about 28 mpg. What are people getting when the engine loosens up?

If that's the computer figure, the real number is probably 25. Mine is the same spec and getting around 37 long term average (real not mfd) although I drive like a wuss.

Sounds low, make sure the van is charged for 24 hours each month as can help. Perhaps it’s on a regen? Mine drops during regen too.

Sorry but what's a regen?
It might be better to read the manual re the regen so you can get your head round it, not having a go but at least you can read it a few times so it sinks in its great bedtime reading

Good evening,

28 mpg sounds a bit low alright. I am a bit more familiar with l/100. Based on filling up the van I believe my van uses about between 7 or 7.5 l/100 km.

Have I said that that I normally have a calm driving style. But the van is normally (almost) fully equipped for camping, except the fresh water.

Regards,
Eberhard

Ours initially was giving low figures like that, but after a good long run it started to improve quite rapidly. We had about 600 miles on the clock when we set off to go on the 2017 factory tour, and by the time we returned the average mpg had gone up into the high 30s.
Now with 13000 on the clock the MFD is showing an average consumption around 43mpg, which is actually just under 40mpg based on fill ups.
We regularly see the MFD reporting around 50mpg at the end of our weekly run across to Harrogate to go cycling.
I don't know how much the DSG affects milage compared to the manual gearbox,

150 DSG - 17245 mls at start of journey.
2 adults,
A 12 year old,
1 small medium dog,

Full ad blue tank,
Full water tank,
Full fuel tank,
Full fridge, cupboards & boot space,
Driveaway awning on bike rack.

At 75mph on motorways (I guess we averaged 40 to 50 mph) All trips over 2 weeks and 2000 miles
1st journey read 40..3mpg Hampshire to euro tunnel to Reims in France.
All other journeys including Alps read 37 to 44 mpg.

The VW mileage computer is often just silly. I use the Road Trip app and measure at fill-ups. Having bikes on the tailgate rack that are above the roof line cuts significantly into mileage. I often travel with 6 people plus bikes, skis, backpacks, etc., but if we’re only two, bikes go inside for long distance, and then on the rack for local trips at the destination. Average consumption over 11k kms, only mountain trips, almost no city driving, usually fully loaded with people/equipment: 1949708B-FD70-49D9-89C7-1E761DE082A8.png

The peaks of high consumption are with bikes on the rack.

I have a two and a half year old 150 Beach. I've been keeping detailed mpg figures for the past 18 months. Even fully laden touring Europe with four bikes I had excellent mpg figures. It dropped slightly when we moved back to London, and even more so when we changed from 215 tyres to 235 tyres. We are hoping it will now improve as we have bought a small car for shorter trips.

The MFD consistently gives better fuel consumption figures than fill to fill measurements.

28/Feb./18? How do you do that? Do you carry diesel inside? I’ve never gotten over 80l. in mine at a fill/up.

Having carried out extensive high speed testing over the last couple of weeks in a a 140SE my average MPG for the month is down to 28.5

Using the speed shown on the sat nav rather than the speedo & using the average over about an hour at each speed on Cruise control.

150kmh - 22.5mpg
135kmh - 30.5mpg
125kmh - 35.5mpg
100kmh - I didn't go that slow on cruise so don't have clue
Hilly bits foot flat to the floor & using lower gears as needed to keep the speed up - 22.5mpg.

All the above are on 255 tyres, they seem to have significant effect on MPG at high speed with consumption figures being approx 5mpg worse than running 215 over the same trip previously.

There is a sweet spot at about 127kmh which gives the best speed v consumption figure with the engine at about 2050rpm - Im guessing this about where the turbo starts to properly spool up. If you use the instantanious consumption display on the MFD you can see the figures change rapidly for a very minor increase in speed.

My overall average for the van is currently 32.5mpg, over 50,000 miles. approx 20,000 of that has been clocked up between Spain & home. The rest is 50/50 between up and down the M1 on university runs & commuting into central London.

Hot engine after a long drive, warm day in Greece, the fuel tank expands. That was a single refuel.

Other large refuels are a part refuel followed by a full refuel, e.g., 11/16 May. On 11 May I stopped at Ashford Services. Diesel at £1.559 per litre. With a nearly empty tank, I refuelled 20 Litres and added that to my next full tank to get the MPG.

What sort of MPG can I expect from the 199 4 Motion DSG variant

Any one ?

T5.1 180 Bi Turbo manual - LT ave 32 MPG, up to 40 with low load, no roof bars/box.

I get 25-27 with a caravan on the back.

Tomorrow's little 360 mile jaunt to Cumbria with no caravan and I would expect to be in high 30's.

Hi Tom
Bit confused by your comment that your mpg has dropped since you went to 235 tyres. My understanding is that the 2 sizes available on the Ocean (215/60 and 235/55) have the same overall diameter on a 17" wheel, as although the 235 is a lower profile it is also wider. If you changed from your factory Beach 16" to 17" wheels this surely means that your speedo and odometer is now inaccurate and although it says your mpg is down it's not?
Please correct me if'm wrong - I'm not an expert. Like you I record my mpg (on Spritmonitor) and find the mfd is optimistic by around 10%. However although I know the amount of fuel is accurate I have always wondered if your speedo overheads by say 5%, which is common, does this also mean the odometer reading is not 100% accurate. Maybe you, or WG, know the answer?

There is no difference in overall circumference of tire combinations mounted on 16” and 17” wheels. Tire sidewall on 17” is shorter, so gives the same overall dimension as a 16” with higher side wall. Speedometer and odometer are not affected. The difference in mileage is due to rolling resistance and possibly wind resistance.

Edit - above post landed as I posted this
The rolling diameter of all 3 types is the same (to within small margins). The 235s have higher rolling resistance (think why racing cycles have rubber bands for tyres). They also run at lower pressures and I suspect that contributes too. The 215s on the 17" rims are usually Continentals with 109 load rating, very stiff walls, very low rolling resistance, but a harsher ride than the 235s.

The 16"/17" refers to the wheel. As far as I am aware the tyre diameters are either the same or close to the same. The 215/235 refers to the width, with the 235 having 20mm more rubber in contact with the road and thus more friction. The tread pattern may also make a difference to the friction.

I'm afraid that I do not know who the odometer measures distance. I expect it counts wheel revolutions and calculates distance by multiplying revolutions by tyre circumference.

Your question about whether the odometer is just as inaccurate as the speedometer, independently of overall circumstances of wheel/tire combinations, is a very good one.
