I do not drive at 44 mph on a free flowing motorway, I drive at 60 - 65 mph, accelerating to up to 70 mph to pass slower moving vehicles.

And if you think that the range of speeds on a free flowing motorway is 56 - 70 mph, you are very much mistaken.

I have already given at least two examples of motorway user where the recommended maximum speed is 50 mph or less (civilian highways agency drivers and those towing horse boxes); and then there are those who drive faster than the limit. 40 - 85 mph is a more realistic range.

Compare that to motorways in some other European countries: Poland and Bulgaria have a speed limit of ~85 mph, German motorways often have no limit at all. On both you can reasonably expect to encounter a motorist driving at about 40 mph, so the range of speeds may well be even greater.

What I find bizarre is all this fuss over MPG. Just get in it drive it when it needs more fuel fill it up again. Who cares? Seriously.

What I find truly bizarre is this. A section of motorway I regularly use is the M25 between the M26 and the M23. It is mostly four lanes in each direction, and has variable limits 40 to 70 mph. What is it that changes 40 mph from being an absolute maximum speed one day to, in some people's minds, an unacceptable speed for safe travel? Surely if the absolute maximum for that stretch is 40 mph one day, it is safe and acceptable to travel at that speed the next day when the absolute maximum is 70 mph?

Oh - and just to give you something to laugh about... I got a ticket for exceeding the speed limit on the German Autobahn.

The temporary limit of 40 is There due to a hazard ahead, a queue, debris in the road, an accident or something similar. The next day when the limit is 70 traveling at 40 you are failing to maintain progress & causing a hazard.

Here is the Google Timeline map of my 51 mpg (from the MFD) or 46 mpg (from brim to brim) trip around Sicily on 11 January. Much of it was so slow that Google thought I was cycling (pale blue) not driving (dark blue).

Why Google Maps thought I managed to average a little over 45 mph on the 155 mile motorway stage between Syracuse and Burger King in Palermo on a push bike is beyond the scope of this thread.
